Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office ‘100 percent clean’ (The Alexandria Town Talk)

The Sheriff’s Office earlier this month tested every employee — from Wagner down — and all of the employees’ results came back negative, by the exception of about 8 percent of the more than 460, Sheriff’s Office Human Resources Administrator Chris Holt said. But all of those 8 percent tested positive for prescription drugs they had legal prescriptions for, he said.

“It’session refreshing to know without a doubt,” Wagner said of his staff.

Both Wagner and Holt explained that only three people in the department knew when the drug test was coming and that employees found out the morning of the test. Those who couldn’t advance in for the test that day were tested as soon as practicable but also underwent a hair test for drugs, Holt explained.

The only employees who went untested were those who had been hired within the bygone time few months and had already been given a test, Holt said. Any new employee who is hired furthermore inclination be given a deaden with narcotics test, Holt said.

Initially, Wagner said they were planning onward conducting a random drug test except he wanted to start with a clean slate and test the entire department.

Wagner reported he had been told that in mostly business settings about 10 percent test positive but was hopeful the number would be less similar to it is a law enforcement procurement. When he heard that everyone came out in every respect, he said the portion was excited.

“I’ve always said I am going to hold our employees to a higher standard, and if they are going to enforce the law, they testament bring forth to obey it,” Wagner said. “(These results) show our common that we are doing that.”

There was one employee, a deputy in the corrections division, who resigned before taking the test, Wagner said.

Now that the department-wide test has been done, the Sheriff’s Office will regularly conduct random drug screening to ensure that the department remains drug-free, he said.
