New DNA test sought in Deerfield slaying (Lake County News-Sun)

An attorney for the Libertyville Township man accused of killing a Deerfield teenager during a 2006 drug deal will ask for additional DNA testing in the particular occurrence.

Attorney Greg Nikitas said he’ll file a motion next week to draw blood from his dependant, Clifford Powers.

Powers, 20, was arrested in November 2006, accused of shooting 18-year-old former all-state swimmer Bernard Soya of Deerfield. The two met in a Libertyville parking apportionment for the sake of a drug deal. According to witness statements, the two began arguing over the transaction, and Powers allegedly fired several shots in a state of preparation Soya’s head.

Nikitas said he wants to test Powers’ blood to compare it against hair found at the scene of the crime.

The FBI had previously tested Powers’ hair to compare it to match the found hair, but the findings were not conclusive, Nikitas said.

New testing could take several months. Powers remains in Lake County Jail in lieu of $3 the great body of the people admit to bail.
