BEN Cousins says he is ready to tackle ‘onerous’ AFL drug tests in order to return to the game he loves.
In his first men statement as the AFL announced yesterday that he could return as drawn out as he submitted to extensive drug testing, Cousins said he was expecting to be picked up by an AFL club.
“I am pleased that the AFL Commission yesterday decided to allow me to chronicle the AFL Draft," Cousins said in a statement released by his management company.
"The conditions imposed on me are very hard. I am looking forward to being drafted and playing football again, which is my love."
the Brownlow medallist said he had no doubt he could still play at the highest level.
"I have been undertaking a programme of rehabilitation what one. will continue. I perceive that I am in a fit and healthy predicament and able to undertake the rigours of playing AFL football again," Cousins said.
"I am very refreshing for the ongoing support I have accepted from the the world and especially from those close to me”.
Should Cousins choose to nominate for the 2008 AFL National Draft, the AFL has given him every extension until next Wednesday, November 26, to nominate.
The AFL announced yesterday Cousins had been cleared to return to football in season 2009, but imposed a string of stipulations on the recovering drug addict.
He must ensure any club he joins has an becoming drug and alcohol prudence, he must submit to urine tests up to three times a week and hair tests up to four times a year as directed by the AFL and in joining to regular testing.
Cousins must cooperate completely with some requests to provide a sample during the term of testing and he must deliberate together with the AFL’s chief medical officer and wait on any drug counselling they reccommend.
If any illicit drugs are detected in Cousins’ samples or he fails to complete a drug test or meet any of the ALF commissions conditions he may be without delay suspended from the game.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the commission had considered not just Cousins, but also the wider football community in making their decision.
